I’ll be the first to admit it — landscape photography is NOT my strength, but when I was asked by a friend C for a piece of colorful art to display in his new home, I pulled out some old work I did a few years ago.  Then, I thought that this was a challenge and I should embrace it.  I didn’t want anything too bold.  I was really thinking of the rich blues you see in the night sky.  So, last night, I headed out to the Powerhouse area in Folsom to snag a few photos.

First, I thought I missed my opportunity.  You see, I was very comfortably and deeply asleep on the couch.  I asked my husband to wake me up in 5 minutes so I could go catch the sunset.  Here’s the thing, I’m a “snoozer”.  Meaning, I LOVE the snooze button.  I NEVER EVER EVER wake up on the first buzz of an alarm clock.  So, when my husband was trying to wake me up, I said, “5 more minutes.”  5 minutes became 15.  So, as we rushed downtown, I thought, “RATS!  We missed it!”  It was pretty dark by the time I made it down to the water.  I had to use my video light to light the way for us.  We eventually made it down there and I thought I would push the limits of my photography skill.  So, I issued myself a challenge.  Not only would I have to shoot a landscape photo, but I would have to do it in poor lighting conditions.  So, I played around a little and luckily had my tripod with me.  I was pleased with the outcome.

The ones I took at the end were definitely my better photos, but I really do love the blue night sky.  These phtotos are straight out of the camera with minor web sharpening and a change in resolution for the web.  I’m so honored that these will end up on C’s wall.  Thanks, C!!!  I hope you enjoy these!

Glamour and Boudoir Photography

January 29th, 2012

So, lately I’ve been finding myself exploring the awesome work of glamour/fashion/boudoir photography.  I know what you all are thinking…you want to take naked photos of people and you might also instantly think about the 1990′s Glamour Shots?  Am I right????  I always think of this photo from Seinfeld.  It’s just funny! Anyway, I’m here [...]

Anyway, I’m here to tell you, no, none of the above is what it is about.  What glamour/boudoir photography is about is making women feel confident and comfortable in their own skin.  I’ve don’t quite a few of these now and everyone ends of having fun and they leave with a sense of confidence.  They get pampered in hair and make up and they get to dress in their best and really accentuate their beauty.  Clients see these photos of themselves and really appreciate their own beauty! My goal is for women to leave their shoot loving themselves even more.  For me, it’s really fun to infuse fashion into my existing style.

Exploring glamour, fashion, and boudoir photography has ignited a passion for learning alternate forms of lighting and embracing fashion infused photography.   For years, I swore by using natural light only.  I felt that people looked best when they were lit by natural light, but I’m learning that there are some amazing things you can do with artificial lighting and It’s really awesome to be adding some of these things to my repertoire.  I still LOVE natural light and it’s still one of my most favorite lights to work with, but I have to say, my eyes are open to a new experience and new type of image I can create. The same can be said by adding fashion photography elements and glamour photography elements and fusing them into something all their own.  The cool thing is that this looks different for different clients.  Each client’s photos will be unique to them and their goals for the shoot!  So, I hope that you all take a chance and pamper yourself and try one of these sessions!

If you would like to find out more information about my glamour and boudoir photography pricing, please feel free to send me an e-mail at info@victoriaflowerphoto.com.  I’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have!

When I was younger, Lunar New Year was a huge deal (it still is a big deal, but it was definitely more fun when red envelopes were involved).  I lived in San Francisco, so there was the parade to watch and parties to go to in the city.  We would all dress up and go to a huge banquet hall with our families and friends to bring in the New Year.  We also did some traditional things at home.  My dad is from mainland China and my mother from Taiwan, so our tradition was a bit of a fusion from what was customary in their respective countries.  We always had a big dinner on the eve of the lunar new year and there were always signs around the home and incense lit.  We would always clean our home before the new year so that the bad luck from the previous year was swept away and the home was prepared to accept the good luck coming in.  Traditionally, you didn’t do any cleaning on the actual new year’s day or any sweeping of floors for fear of sweeping away any good luck.  There are other traditions that my family didn’t necessarily practice, but if you’re curious, you can do some reading here.

Some of my fondest memories were of the lion dances we would see in Chinatown.  The colors are really beautiful and the lion dancers were quite athletic.  The lion dance was meant to ward off evil.  They’ll often visit business to bring good luck to them in the new year or when they have their grand opening.  I have also seen a few lion dances at Chinese weddings.  This year, there was a fun YouTube video of a lion dance (well, I think technically this might be a tiger dance).  It cracked me up!

This one is cute, but it’s a long video!

Anyway, I hope that you all have an excellent 2012 or excellent year of the dragon.  Which ever calendar you use to celebrate new year, I hope that this new year is one where you have happiness, health, and prosperity!

I have to share with you something that just blew my mind.  I got a text from a friend, Amber of Shoop’s Photography.  She was asking my availability and if I had any time to do a family portrait session.  Sometimes we’ll refer clients to each other when we’re booked or we ask if either would be opposed to helping with a session if they were available.  So, I thought nothing of it.  I continued to asked about details and realized it was for HER FAMILY!!!!  Whoa — wait – time out!  “Amber, you want ME to photograph YOUR family?” is what I believe the text said.  Okay, I was so flattered!!  Sooooooo, flattered.  You see, Amber and I met a few years ago.  I was wanting to learn more about photography and she needed some help with some things on the back end and voila — an awesome relationship was born.  So, she’s seen me from the beginning.  She’s coached me through many hurtles and offered me so many opportunities to learn WITHOUT expecting anything in return.  Of all the photographers I have contacted, she was ONE OF TWO who was willing to work with me.  Amber is amazing and I wouldn’t hesitate referring anyone to her!  She is amazing.  So, you see, it takes a lot of trust for one photographer to allow another to photograph them.  I totally get that and I was blown away she chose me!

Oh, and let’s add that this is the first time they have had someone else photograph them — no pressure!  So, with that being said, I was NERVOUS!!  I didn’t want to embarrass myself.  It was like the teacher asking you to show them how you do something.  We’ve shot weddings together, and we jive pretty well together.  We have our little dance figured out, but this is different.  This time, she is the CLIENT!!!  I was excited and nervous all at the same time.  I had met, John, her husband, before, but it was my first time meeting the kiddos and they are so sweet!  I had a blast hanging out with them.  They took me on a little adventure/mini hike through some trails and their little secret family hang out area (sorry, I can’t share — I’ve been vowed to secrecy ;-) ).  It was such a pretty hike and I think we snagged some fun photos!!!

The above photo was a joint effort between Amber and I.  She did the editing, while I snagged the photo!  Pretty good looking family, eh???

This was at the beginning of the hike and J, their eldest, was cracking up that I was Mission Impossible style on the ground in a ninja pose!  Hahah!!  Anything to get the shot!  This is probably, one of my favorite family portraits from that day.

As I mentioned, this is the oldest, J.  He is a hoot!  You forget how young he is when he speaks.  He was so well behaved and had some good ideas for the shoot.  He was so excited to be out and actually said the shoot was fun!  Gasp!!!  ;-)  There are good genes coursing through the veins of the family!

So, this little guy is the youngest, A.  I’m somewhat convinced that he’s going to enter into the scary world of male models because he was always on!  I have not yet seen a kiddo turn it on quite like this little one.  He was fierce in front of the camera — he was quite comfortable in the spotlight which is super fun when you’re shooting!  Sorry, elementary school girls, you’ll have to get in line!  ;-).  Amber and John, will you be ready for what’s to come in about 12 years????

Together, he and his brother made it a blast to shoot!  We all laughed and had a pretty good time just playing in the “wilderness”.  These two kiddos really were great!  Thanks for making this so easy and fun for me, boys!

Now, onto one of my most favorite photos from the shoot.  Amber and John hadn’t had a lot of photos together.  I get it.  When you’re a photographer and you have a family live and other aspects of your job, its quite difficult to get photos of yourself.  So, I was so pleased that we were able to snag these amazing photos!!!

So, I LOVE movies and the quote that comes to mind is “REALLY really good looking”.  You know, from Zoolander?  Anyway, these two looked so good and I think I know where A gets his fierceness from….papa John.  John was such a trooper too — with a bum knee he put up with me telling him to stand up then sit down then squat and stand back up again!  Thanks, John — you’re awesome.  Plus, that super beautiful wife of yours is pretty amazing too!!!!

So, Felts Family, it was truly and honor and a pleasure to spend some time hanging out with you.  Amber, you’re a huge part of where I am in my photography!  Thank you for being so helpful and open to bringing up a colleague!  I hope our friendship and business relationship continues to grow in this new year and beyond!  PS – tell the rest of those good looking dudes a BIG thank you for allowing me to photograph them.

Okay, so, I admit.  It’s been a while since I’ve posted, but I promise, it’s for good reason.  I have been crazy busy with shoots and I didn’t want to rush any of my projects or my post!  I really wanted to give me shoots the attention they deserved.  So, I’ll be sharing some more of what I’ve done in the last few months with you in the coming posts.

Today is about starting fresh and setting new goals.  I think every year we have to reevaluate where are and see if we’re on the right track.  If we aren’t, then we have to refocus.  So, I spent today trying to see if I could produce a clearer picture of where I wanted my business to go.  I am happy with what I’ve done this past year (I’ll share, I promise).  I definitely want to take things to the next level.  So, I’ve invested – invested in more equipment (my mobile studio just got better – more lights, more light stands, and other doodads), invested in furthering my education (I will be attending more workshops, so that I may provide you with a better product and service), and invested in myself with setting boundaries with work (so that I don’t burn out).

I am also working on my goals on a more personal level.

I’ve let my fitness goals go this past year.  I have been on a bender ever since I tried that crazy diet.  I learned that I cannot deprive myself of all those things because I just don’t handle depravation well.  So, I’m resetting.  I’m going to reset my diet and my fitness.  I’ll keep things fresh and new and try things that I haven’t tried.  I’m currently taking a boxing class.  It’s rather intense and it’s not like your usual aerobic kickboxing class or anything.  I’m also continuing my CrossFit training!  The CrossFit Games Open registration begins on February 1, so if you plan on competing, get ready!!!  There were some snafus in the beginning of last year’s registration, so hopefully, this year, they’ll be ready to go!  I plan on improving my diet.  Reducing my carbohydrate intake some and eating less processed food, however, being a pesco-vegetarian, it’s hard to eliminate them all.

I will be working on my need to be a “keeper”.  My friend SG calls me a “keeper”.  I like to hang on to things.  I have a hard time throwing things away because….what if you need it????  It’s a trait I inherited from my parents.  It’s a tough one to beat.  I have been doing some purging, but in the next few days, I hope to get rid of a lot of stuff.  I recently found receipts from 1999!!!  Embarrassing, I know.  Yes, I did get rid of them.

I will be working harder, but I will be mindful of boundaries.  In the past, I would take things on with gusto and go 110%, but found that I would get burned out and would need a break.  So, I’m going to work hard, but also pace myself.

I want to be a better friend.  Over the last 5 years or so, I have not been the quality of friend that I once was.  I forgot my very dear friend’s birthday and I have forgotten the birthday’s of my friend’s children.  I used to be one of those folks who was on top of it with the cards and all that good stuff.  Ever since graduate school, I have let those things fall by the wayside.  Not okay.

I want to be a student.  Well, not in the traditional sense, because I’ve already done enough of that for now, but I want to be educated on various subjects.  I want to make sure I find time to continue to enrich my brain with things that interest me:  business, exercise science, medicine, and personal finance.

So, those are  my goals for 2012 both professionally and personally.  Make sure you have your goals etched out for the year.  If you’d like to share them, I’d love to hear about them.  I want to leave you with a photo of my friend’s dog.  She texted me this photo on New Year’s Eve.  His name is Jack and he is ready for the New Year!!!!  Isn’t he just so handsome?
